USING DLM TO TEST A DRIVE
Overview BlueScaleDriveLifecycleManagement(DLM)letsyoumonitor
theDLMhealthinformationofeachdriveinthelibraryandhelpsyou
identifydrivesthatexperienceahighnumberoferrorsorotherproblems
duringoperation.SeeChapter10–UsingDriveLifecycleManagement,
beginningonpage322fordetailedinformationaboutusingDLMto
monitorthehealthofdrives.
IfyoususpectthatadriveisexperiencingproblemsoriftheDrive
LifecycleManagementreportindicatesthatadriveisexperiencing
repeatederrors,youcanusetheDLMDriveHealthVerificationwizardto
testthedrive.Thistest,whenusedinconjunctionwithotherDLMdata
andMLMdata,canhelpyoudeterminewhetheradriveorthemediaisthe
sourceoftheerrorsyouareinvestigating.
Note: TheDLMDriveHealthVerificationtesttakesapproximately15
minutestocomplete.
Requirements for Using the Wizard
BeforeyoucanruntheDLMDriveHealthVerificationwizard,the
followingrequirementsmustbemet:
Thedrivemustnotcontainacartridge.
Ascratchtapemustbeavailableinthepartition’sentry/exitpool.The
scratchtapemusthavethefollowingqualities:
Itmustbethesamemediatypeandgenerationasthedrivebeing
tested.
ItmusthaveacartridgehealthofGood(green)foranMLM‐enabled
cartridgeorUsableforacartridgethatisnotMLM‐enabled.
Itmusthaveabarcodelabel.
IfthescratchcartridgeisencryptedwithBlueScaleencryption,the
keymustbestoredinthelibrary
Note: Ifthecartridgehealthisunknown(thatis,itisnotcurrently
listedinthelibrary’sMLMdatabase),thelibraryloadsthe
cartridgeintoadrivetodeterminethehealthbeforebeginning
thetest.
Make sure that the scratch tape does not contain data that you need to retain. The
test process overwrites all data on the tape.
The test fails if the scratch tape does not meet the conditions listed above.
