24-bit sampling to disk
Whensamplingtodisk,youcanchooseeither16bitor
24bitresolution.Both16‐and24bitWAVEfilescanbe
useddirectlyinSequencermodeaudiotracks.When
loadedasRAMsamples,24bitWAVEfilesare
automaticallyconvertedto16bitresolution.
Sampling in Sampling mode
InSamplingmode,youcansampleanalogaudiofrom
connectedmicrophonesorlineinputs,ordigitalaudio
fromS/P DIForUSB.Ifyoulike,youcanalsosample
throughtheKRONOSeffects.
YoucanevensampledirectlyfromaudioCDsinan
externalUSBCDR/RW.
Samplescanbeprocessedthrougheffectsand
internal
lysampledagain(“resampled”).Youcanuse
either“A u t o modewhichautomaticallyappliesthe
specifiedeffectprocessingtotheselectedsample,or
“Manual”modewhichletsyouplaythesample
manuallywitheffectsappliedandresampleyour
performance.
Program, Combination, Sequencer
modes
InProgram,Combination,andSequencermodes,you
canresampleacompleteliveperformanceincluding
filters,effects,KARMA,andevensequencerplayback.
Youcanalsosampleexternalaudiosources,mixthe
KRONOSsoundswiththeexternalaudioandsample
thecombinedresult,orevenmonitortheperformance
oftheKRONOSwhilesamplingonlytheexternal
so
urce.
In-Track Sampling in Sequencer mode
InSequencermode,youcansamplewhileplaying
alongwithaSong,andautomaticallycreatenotedata
totriggerthenewsamplesattheappropriatemoment
intheSong.Youcanthenmanipulatethesesamples
usingthesynthesisabilitiesoftheHD1,forcreative
alternativestoHDR.Thisiscalled“InTr
ack
Sampli
ng.”
Sampling frequency and bit resolution
Asshowninthediagram,samplingreadsthelevelof
theanalogsignalatfixedintervalsalongthetimeaxis,
andstoresthelevelsinmemoryasdigitaldata.
Thetimebetweentheseintervalsiscalledthe
“samplingfrequency.”48kHz(kiloHertz)meansthat
samplingisperformed48,000timeseachsecond,so
thattheinterv
alsare1/48,000ofa
secondapart—
approximately0.02083ms(milliseconds).
Thehigherthesamplingfrequency,theclosertothe
originalanalogsignalthewaveforminmemorywill
be.
Eachlevelisreadandconvertedintodigitaldata.The
accuracyofthelevelmeasurementisdeterminedby
thebitresolution.Thisprocessconv
ertsananalog
signalwithinfiniteresolutionintoadigitalsignalwith
finiteresolution.With16bitresolution,eachlevelis
indicatedin65,536steps(thesixteenthpoweroftwo).
Thegreaterthebitresolution,theclosertotheoriginal
analogsignalthewaveforminmemorywillbe

devicessuchasDATs.CDsuse44.1kHz16bit
sampling,whichisaslightlylowersampling
frequency.
Samples and Multisamples
Samples
Thedatathatisrecorded(sampled)intointernal
memoryorloadedfromafileisreferredtoasasample
orsamplefile.Samplesconsistoftheactualwaveform
data,andparametersthatspecifyhowthedatawillbe
playedback,suchasStart,LoopStart,andEnd

edinmul
tisamplesand
drumkits.
SamplingModesupportsamaximumof16,000
Samplesatonce.SamplesinEXsandUserBanksdo
notcounttowardsthismaximum.
TheKRONOScanshareasinglewaveformamong
multiplesamples.Thisallowsyoutocreatemultiple
sampleswithdifferentplaybackaddressesfromthe
sam
ewaveformwithoutwastinginternalmemory.For
example,supposethatyouhavewaveformdatathat
recordsavoicesaying“OneTwoThree.”Thissingle
pieceofwaveformdatacouldbesharedbythree
samples,withtheplaybackofsampleAproducing
“OneTwoThree,”sampleBproducing“OneTwo,
andsam
pleCproducing“TwoThree.”
