8. 13Laylines
Laylinesareusedinsailingtoshowhowfarthevesselmustsailonthecurrenttackinordertomake
atargetwaypointaftertacking,givenpresentwindconditions.
Whenalaylineisusedtocalculatetheroutetoawaypoint,itwilltakeintoaccountanumberoffactors
toprovideabetteralternativecourse,comparedtosimplynavigatinginastraightlinetoawaypoint.
Thereasonwhylaylinesareamoreefficientwaytosailtoaspecificpointisbecausethey’re
basedonTrueWindDirection(TWD)andeither:a)fixedupwind/downwindsailingangles,orb)
theuseofpolarstoreflecttheperformanceofyourparticularvessel.Inthisrespect,sailingalong
laylinesmaximizesyourVelocityMadeGood(VMG)towindward.Anotherreasonwhylaylines
aremoreaccurateisbecausetheycanalsobeconfiguredtoaccountfortidalcurrent,aswellas
theleewayofyourvessel.
Toensurethelaylinecalculationsareasaccurateaspossible,it’simportanttoensurethatthe
followingsettingsarecorrectlyconfigured:
