Operations Involving Disks
Initializing Disks
To
use a new disk with the Amiga,
it
must be initialized. If you copy a disk, the
new disk
is
initialized as it receives the copy. To initialize a disk without making
a
copy,
insert the disk in a disk drive, select the disk icon that appears on the
Workbench, then choose Initialize from the Disk menu. The disk drive light will
come
on until the initialization
is
completed.
Duplicating Disks
To
duplicate a disk, select the icon for the disk, then choose Duplicate from the
Workbench menu. Note that when you choose Duplicate, the Amiga makes use
of
only
one
disk drive even if there are two
or
more drives.
Copying Disks
In the last chapter, you saw how to copy disks using menus. The quick way to
copy
a disk
is
to drag its icon over the icon for a disk that will receive the copy.
If
you have more than one disk drive, a requester asks you to insert the disk you
want to copy (the
source disk) into one
of
the drives, and the disk to receive the
copy (the
destination disk) into another. (Note that
"drive
dfO:" referred to
in
the
requester
is
the internal drive.
"Drive
dfl:"
is
the external drive.)
Two warnings:
Copying a disk destroys any previous information stored on the disk
that
receives the copy.
If, when you copy a disk, you insert the destination disk in place of the
source disk, you will not get a message telling you
that
you've inserted the
wrong disk. Be
sure
to insert the correct disk.
