File Transfer Protocol (FTP)—Enables the transfer of files between hosts. This protocol is used to load
new images onto the switch.
Additional IP Protocols
Many additional IP-related protocols can be used with IP forwarding. These protocols are included as part
of the base code.
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)—Used to match the IP address of a device with its physi-
cal (MAC) address. For more information, see “Configuring Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)” on
page 15-12.
Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)—Used to back up routers. For more information, see
Chapter 22, “Configuring VRRP.”
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)—Specifies the generation of error messages, test packets,
and informational messages related to IP. ICMP supports the ping command used to determine if hosts
are online. For more information, see “Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)” on page 15-29.
Multicast Services—Includes IP multicast switching (IPMS). For more information, see Chapter 24,
“Configuring IP Multicast Switching.”
