7.3 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
This section provides an overview of SNMP functions, an example configuration, and a reference list of the
SNMP commands used by the SBx3112 switch.
7.3.1 Introduction to SNMP Support
The SBx3112 switch allows a network management system to query and control one or more managed devices
using the SNMP. Each managed device has a Managed Information Base (MIB), which includes the device’s config-
uration as well as counters for system events and activities. The network management system can ask the
device for information only or ask the device to change its configuration through the devices’s SNMP agent. The
device can also send unsolicited messages called traps for critical events.
Note: The SBx3112 switch supports SNMP version 1 (SNMPv1) and SNMP version 2 (SNMPv2c). SNMP
version 3 is not supported.
7.3.1.1 SNMP Internet Standards
SNMP consists of a set of standards for network management defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF) (http://www.ietf.org/). The SNMP for the SBx3112 switch uses the following standards:
• RFC 1213 (referred to as MIB-II), which defines the core set of objects.
• RFC 1157 (referred to as SNMP), which defines the protocol used between the management stations and
devices.
• RFC 1902, which defines the structure of management information for SNMPv2.
• RFC 1903, which defines the textual conventions for SNMPv2.
• RFC 1904, which defines the conformance statements for SNMPv2.
• ATN Enterprise MIB, which defines the Allied Telesis enterprise MIBs.
7.3.2 SNMP Community
An SNMP community is a relationship between a network management system (NMS) and an SNMP agent. The
community name is used like a password for a trivial authentication scheme. Both SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c pro-
vide security based on the community name only.
The components of an SNMP community include the following:
• Protocols used for transport and messaging
• Transport protocol - The SBx3112 uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Traps are sent out over UDP
port 162; all other messages are sent out over UDP port 161.
• SNMP messages - SNMP messaging uses the commands get, get-next, get-response, set, and trap.
(Set is not supported on the SBx3112.)
