TowingVehicleWithFrontWheelsSuspended
CAUTION
Topreventtransmissiondamage,vehicles
shouldnotbetowedevenshortdistanceswithout
suspendingrearwheelsorremovingtheaxle
shaftsorpropellershaft.
Ifthechassisisequippedwithtandemaxlesand
thevehicleistobetowedfromthefront,the
forwardrearaxlemayberaisedtocleartheroad
surfaceandsecuredtotheframebychainsor
U-bolts,allowingonlyrearaxletocontactroad
surface.Axleshaftsmustberemovedfromrear
axleassembly.Thewheelhubendsmustbe
coveredtopreventlossofaxlelubricantand
entranceofcontaminants.Useextremecare
insecuringthechainsorU-boltstoprevent
possibledamageofbrakelines,hoses,orother
components.
Whenitisnecessarytotowavehiclewiththefrontwheels
suspended,extraprecautionsmustbetakentoavoid
transmissionordifferentialdamage.Proceedasfollows.
Removeaxleshaftsfromaxleassemblytopreventthewheels
fromdrivingthedifferentialandthetransmission.Thewheel
hubendsmustbecoveredtopreventlossofaxlelubricant
andentranceofcontaminants.Ifaxleshaftsarenotremoved,
removalofpropellershaftsatrearaxlewillberequired.

CAUTION
Topreventdifferentialand/ortransmission
damage,removedriveaxlesonvehiclesthat
mustbetowedtoaservicefacilitywiththedrive
axlewheelsontheground.
CAUTION
Topreventpropertydamage,donotuseachisel
orwedgetoloosenaxleshaftsanddowels.The
chiselorwedgecandamagehub,axleshafts,and
oilsealsifused.
NOTE:Onvehiclesequippedwithadriver-controlled
differentiallock,beforeairpressureislostthedifferential
lockmustbemanuallycagedpriortoremovingtheaxle
shaft.Failuretodosomaymakereinstallationoftheaxle
shaftextremelydifcultandtimeconsuming.
NOTE:Oneoftheaxleshaftshastwosetsofsplines–
onesettoengagewithdifferentialsidegearandonesetto
engagewithshiftcollarforthedifferentiallock.Itmaybe
necessarytorotateshaftslightlytoalignsidegearspline
teethwithclutchcollarteethinordertoremoveaxleshaft.
1.Shiftmaindifferentialtothelocked(engaged)position.
