treadiswornto4/32in(3mm)orless.Retreadorrotate
worntirestodriveposition.
•RearAxles-Tiresmustberemovedwhentreadisworn
to2/32in(2mm).
Ifribtireisusedonfrontaxleandlug-oroff-road-typeonrear
axlepositions:
•Front(Steering)Axle-Replacetiresatfrontwheels
whentreadiswornto4/32in(3mm)orless.
•RearAxles-Tiresmustberemovedwhenthetread
iswornto2/32in(2mm)orless.Tiresidentiedwith
thewordregroovablemoldedonthesidewallcanbe
regrooved.Aminimumof3/32in(2.38mm)ofundertread
mustbeleftatthebottomofthegrooves.
WheelandTireBalancing
Out-of-roundorout-of-balancewheelsortirescancausevehicle
vibrationandbounce,andshimmy.Replacedamagedor
out-of-roundwheels.Out-of-roundtiresandwheelassemblies
canbecorrectedbyrecheckingthetirerelativetothewheel.
Thetireandwheelassemblyshouldthereafterbedynamically
balancedandreinspectedwhilespinningforanout-of-round
condition.
Wear
Radialtirescanexhibitthreetypesofnormalwearpatterns–
even,erosion,orchamfer.
EvenWearisasignthatthetireisbeingproperlyusedand
maintained.
ErosionWearhasalsobeencalledrollingwear,channel,or
riverwear.Erosionwearisfoundmoreoftenatfreerollingtires.
Thisisanindicationthatthetireisbeingusedinaslowwearing
operation.Whathappensisthatthebeltpliesareheldveryrigid
andthetreadisnotallowedtodistortasitpassesthroughthe
contactarea.Wearwillonlyoccurattheedgeofthetread.No
correctiveactionisrequired.Iferosiongetstobe1/16inch(2
mm)ormore,thetiremayberotatedtoadriveaxle.
ChamferorShoulderWear,withtiresinatedproperly,isa
normaltendencyofmostradialtiredesigns.Ifbothinsideand
outsideshouldersarewearingevenlyaroundthetire,nofurther
actionisrequired.Overinationisnoteffectiveincorrectingthis
effect.
IrregularWear
Ifirregularwearispresent,checkthetirepressure,wheel
balance,shockandsuspensioncomponentcondition,wheel
bearingendplayandaxlealignment.
