batteriesusinganautomaticoatcharger.Then,havea
qualiedtechnicianperformanelectricalsystemtestusingan
International
®
ElectronicSystemT ester(MidtronicsinTELLECT
EXPHDExpandableElectricalDiagnosticsPlatformavailable
throughyourlocalInternationaldealer)tocatchelectricalsystem
problemsbeforetheycausefurtherdamagetothebatteries,to
preventastrandedvehicle.Thetestwillcheckforalternator
amperageoutput,startercurrentdraw,andbatteryamperage
capacity.Thistypeoftestingwilldetectweaknessesthatmay
notyetbeapparentduringnormaldailyoperations.
TerminalInspection-Cleaning-CorrosionProtection
Periodicallyinspectelectricalconnectorsontheengine,battery,
andframeforcorrosionandtightness.Inspectexposedcables
forfrayingorsignsofabrasion.Exposedterminals,suchas
crankingmotor,alternator,andfeed-throughstudsshouldbe
cleanedandrecoatedwithadielectricgrease,orequivalent
pasteorsprayprotectant.Theinspection/cleaning/corrosion
protectionshouldincludefeed-throughconnections,powerand
groundcableconnectionsforbatteries,engines,andthestarter
stud.
Connectorsthataremoresubjecttocorrosionmaybe
disassembledandsprayedinternallywithalightcoatingof
dielectricgrease.Usegreasesparingly,astoomuchgreasewill
notallowairtoescapefromtheconnectionandthiscompressed
airwillpushoutthesealsintheelectricalconnectors.
AccessoryFeedConnections
WARNING
Topreventpersonalinjuryand/ordeath,or
damagetoproperty,donotincreasesizeoffuse
orcircuitbreakerorchangetypeofbreaker
suppliedwithyourtruck,asthiscouldcause
wiringtooverheatandpossiblyburn.Electrical
circuitsaredesignedwithaparticularwiregauge
tomeetthefuseandcircuitbreakercurrent
rating.
Vehicleelectricalsystemsarecomplexandofteninclude
electroniccomponents,suchasengineandtransmission
controls,instrumentpanels,andantilockbrakes.Whilemost
systemsstilloperateonbatteryvoltage(12volts),some
systemscanbeashighas90voltsoraslowas5volts.
RefertotheElectricalCircuitDiagrammanuals,availablefrom
yourInternationaldealer,toensurethatanybodylightsand
accessoriesareconnectedtocircuitsthatarebothappropriate
andnotoverloaded.Nomodicationshouldbemadetoany
vehiclecontrolsystemwithoutrstcontactingyourInternational
dealer.
FusesandRelays
Fusesandrelaysarelocatedinsidethecabwithinthefuse
panelcover.Refertotheschematiclocatedonthefuse
panelcoverinthecab,theschematiconthefusecoverinthe
luggagecompartment,ortheFusePanelSchematiclocatedin
SECTION8MaintenanceIntervalsandSpecicationsof
thismanualforfuseorrelayreplacement.
