Duringoperation,theairandoilinsidethehub/wheelcavity
expands.Itisnormalforamistofoiltobepresentontheoutside
ofthehubcaparoundtheventslitorhole.Overtime,ifnotwiped
off,thislmmaycollectdustandappearunsightly.Iftheentire
faceandendofthehubcapbecomewetwithoil,investigatethe
cause.RefertotheServiceManualforrepairprocedures.
Routinelycleanthehubcaptoensurethatthelubricantlevel
canbeeasilyobservedthroughtheclearwindowasintended.
Insituationswherethewindowiscleanontheoutsidebut
discoloredontheinside,checkthelubricantlevelbyremoving
therubberll/ventplugandinsertangerintothehole.
ThespeciedlubricantlevelforInternational
®
clearwindowtype
hubcapsisfromtheminimumlineto5/16inch(0.8cm)above
theminimumline.
Ifthelubricantlevelsuddenlydropsdramaticallybelowthe
minimumlevel,seetheServiceManualfordiagnosticprocedure.
Alignment
Maintainingfrontaxlealignmentisveryimportanttoachieving
maximumtirelifeandvehiclecontrol.Inspectingsteeraxletires
intherst3,000miles(4,828km)to10,000miles(16,094km)
willgenerallyshowiftiresarewearingnormally.
•Rapidoutsideshoulderwearonbothtiresindicatestoo
muchtoe-in.
•Rapidinsideshoulderwearonbothtiresindicatestoo
muchtoe-out.
•Excessivewearontheinsideoroutsideofonesteertire
butnottheothercanindicateatoe-inortoe-outcondition
coupledwithamisalignedfrontorrearaxle.
•Pullingtotherightorleftcanindicatemisalignmentofthe
frontorrearaxle,unequaltirepressures,oradamaged/
mismatchedtire.

RearAxle
InspectionandLubrication
ChecktomakesurethattherearaxlemountingU-bolts,
attachingormountingboltsandnutsaresecurelytightened.
Looseormisalignedrearaxleswillaffectvehiclealignment,
tirewear,andhandling.RefertoSECTION8—Maintenance
IntervalsandSpecicationsfortorquespecications.
Checktherearaxleoillevel.Properoillevelminimizesgear
wear,heat,anddamagetothewheelbearingsandseals.The
oillevelshouldbeattheloweredgeofthelevelinspectionhole
whenthevehicleisonlevelground.Addoilasnecessary.
