Operation
Whenthetransmissionisinmanualmode,engineprotection
upshiftsaredisabled.Thiscouldresultinanundesirableengine
overspeedcondition.Itistheoperator’sresponsibilitytoprevent
mechanicaldamagetothetruck.Undertheseconditions,use
servicebrakesandselecttheappropriategear,asrequired,to
keeptheenginerpmwithinoperatinglimits.
EngineFeatures
Theenginesareelectronicallycontrolleddieselengines.The
engineEngineControlModule(ECM)monitorsandcontrolsthe
injectionprocessandotherenginefunctions.TheECMalso
communicateswiththeBodyController(BC)andalertsitto
out-of-rangeoperatingconditions.TheBC,inturn,generates
enginefunctionindicatorsandwarningindicators.Sincemany
oftheengineperformancefeaturesareownerselectableand
electronicallyprogrammable,someoftheoperatingparameters
willvaryfromvehicletovehicle.Someofthesestandardand
optionalmonitoredengineoperatingfunctionsandwarning
indicatorsinclude:

•EngineWarm-UpControl(ECM)–Adjustsinjector
operationasrequired.
•ColdAmbientProtection(CAP)–Aidsenginewarmup
andmaintainsenginetemperature.
•CruiseControl–Providesvehiclespeedcontrol.
SomeOptionalFeatures:
•EngineWarningSystem–Thissystemilluminatesthe
RedStopLampandactuatesabeeperwhenwarning
thresholdsforcoolanttemperature,enginecoolantlevel,
and/orlowengineoilpressureareexceeded.
•EngineShutdownSystem–Thissystemshutsdown
theengineafter30secondsofoperationbeyondcritical
thresholdvaluesforcoolanttemperatureand/oroil
pressure.
•ThrottleControlforPTOOperation.
•RoadSpeedLimiting/Governor–Programmable
maximumspeed.
•IdleShutdownTimer–Shutsdownengineafter5
minutesofidletime.
HD-OBDOverview
TheHD-OBDsystemusesmanyindividualpreprogrammed
monitorstoensurethevehicleismeetingemissionsstandards.
AnHD-OBDmonitorisastrategytoevaluatetheperformance
ofanemissionsrelatedsystemorcomponent.Allmonitors
aredesignedforexecutioninaprescribedfrequency;some
monitorsruncontinuously,whilesomerunaspecicratio
againstthenumberofdrivecycles.
Theoperatorwillbealertedtoemissionsorothersystem
problemswhentheMalfunctionIndicatorLamp(MIL)illuminates.
WhentheMILilluminates,bringthevehicleinforserviceat
thenextavailableopportunity.TheHD-OBDsystemdoesnot
changethewaythevehicleshouldbedriven,therecommended
drivingstyle,orthewayyouusethevehicle.
