Periodiccheckingofpushrodtravelorbrakeadjustmentis
essentialforgoodbraking.Pushrodtravelshouldbechecked
everyserviceintervaltodetermineifadjustmentisnecessary.
Brakechamberpushrodsonoriginalequipmentchambersnow
incorporateanoverstrokeindicator(anorangepaintmarker
nearthebaseofthepushrod)toaidadjustmentchecks.Ifthe
pushrodiscleanandtheorangemarkercanbeseenprotruding
fromthechamberwhenthebrakesareapplied,thebrakes
requireadjustment.
Slackadjustersshouldalsobecheckedtoensureproper
operationoftheadjustermechanismateveryinterval.Pushrod
travelshouldbelessthanthemaximumallowedstrokewithout
brakesdragging.
Inspectbrakeliningseverymaintenanceinterval.Whenbrake
shoes(orpads)areworntowithin1/16inch(1.6mm)ofrivets
(orbackingplates),asindicatedbyalineorotherfeatureonthe
edgeofmostbrakeshoes(orpads),brakeshoes(orpads)must
bereplaced.
Thisinspectionoradjustmentshouldonlybeperformedby
qualiedservicepersonnelandmustbeinaccordancewith
instructionsprovidedbytheServiceManual.
NOTE:Donotoverlookthebrakesonthetrailereither.
Brakeconditiononatrailerisjustasimportantasthe
tractor.Properbrakebalanceontrucksandtractortrailers
isessentialforgoodbraking.
Atleastonceayear,theentirebrakesystemmustbeinspected
byatrainedmechanic.Deterioratedcomponentsorcomponents
wornoutsideofspecicationsmustbereplaced.Check:
1.Rubbercomponentsforcondition,cracks,tears,wear,
andmissingcomponents.
2.Conditionofdrums,brakechambers,andslack
adjustersforwear,corrosion,maladjustment,cracks,
andmissingcomponents.
3.Forairleaks.Noairleakageispermissible.Also,
checkforairleakswithparkingbrakedisengagedand
wheelsblocked.
4.Hoseorpipesforrust,damage,deterioration.
5.Properoperationofservice,parking,andtrailerbrake
controls.
6.TheconditionandfullinsertionoftheABSwheelspeed
sensors,wiring,andconnectors.
7.ProperABSwheelspeedsensor-to-exciterteethgap.

Theairdryerremoveshumidity(water),aircompressoroil,and
dirtfromtheincomingcompressedair,thusprotectingtheair
systemagainstdeteriorationandrestriction.
