Oncertainautomaticandautomatedmanualtransmissions,
ifthetransmissionuidtemperatureisbelowacertainpreset
range,theTransmissionControlModule(TCM)maylimit
transmissionoperationuntilthesumptemperaturerisestoallow
thetransmissiontoperformanormalshiftschedule.Certain
transmissionmayhaveapreheatingrequirementtoraise
transmissiontemperaturetoapointwhichthetransmission
maybesafelyoperated.RefertotheTransmissionOperator
Manualthatcamewiththetruckatinitialpurchaseforproper
proceduresandtemperatureranges.
HighFluidTemperature
Ifthetransmissiongaugesindicatetransmissionoverheating
duringnormaloperation,stoptheengineandverifythat
thetransmissionuidleveliscorrectandthattheengine
temperaturesarewithinnormallimits.Ifthehightransmission
orenginetemperaturespersist,stoptheengineandcontact
yournearestInternationalDealerforfurtherassistance.
ManualTransmissions
Vehicleswithamanualtransmissionhaveaclutchpedal
thatisusedtoengageordisengagetheclutch,connecting
ordisconnectingtheenginefromthetransmissionandrear
wheels.Withtheclutchpedalreleased(extended),theclutchis
engaged,drivingthetransmissionandrearwheels.Depressing
theclutchpedalreleasestheclutch,permittingtransmission
gearchanges.
Clutcheswilllastmanythousandsofmilesifproperlyusedand
maintained.Almosteveryearlyclutchfailurecanbetracedto
excessivefrictionheat.Donotrideorsliptheclutch.
Onceaclutchisfullyengaged,thereisnoheatgeneratedand
littleornowear.However,duringthebriefperiodwhenthe
clutchispickinguptheload,considerableheatisgenerated.By
ridingorslippingtheclutch,theperiodofpartialengagementis
lengthened,causingunnecessaryheatandwearandreduced
clutchlife.
