EngineBlockHeater:Forcoldclimatesanoptionalengine
blockheaterisavailable.Theblockheaterutilizesanexternal
powersourcetokeeptheenginecoolantwarmanda120volt
socketforconnectingtotheexternalpowersource.The120volt
socketismountedbelowthedriver-sidedoor.
ColdWeatherOperation
Inordertooperatetheengineintemperaturesof32°F(0°C)or
lower,observethefollowinginstructions:
•Makecertainthatbatteriesareofsufcientsizeandin
fullychargedcondition.Checkthatallotherelectrical
equipmentisinoptimumcondition.
•Usepermanenttypeengineantifreezesolutiontoprotect
againstdamagebyfreezing.
•Attheendofeachdailyoperation,drainwaterfromfuel/
waterseparator,ifequipped.
•Fillfueltankatendofdailyoperationtoprevent
condensationinfueltank.
•Besuretousepropercoldweatherlubricatingoil,andbe
surecrankcaseisatproperlevel.
•Attemperaturesof20°F(-6°C)andbelow,itis
recommendedthatyouuseanengineblockmounted
coolantheatertoimprovecoldstarting.
•Ifoperatinginarctictemperaturesof-20°F(-29°C)
orlower,consultyourInternationalTruckdealerfor
informationaboutspecialcoldweatherequipmentand
precautions.
EngineIdling
CAUTION
Topreventpropertydamage,adheretothis
Caution.Becausedieselenginesarehighly
efcient,theyuseverylittlefuelwhileidling.As
aresult,idlingincoldweatherwillnotheatthe
enginetoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.This
inturncancauseabuildupofheavydepositsof
carbonandrustonvalvestems,causingthem
tostick.Stickingvalvescancausesignicant
valvetraindamage.Thecoldertheambient
temperature,themorelikelythiswilloccur.
Thefollowingcoldweatheridlingguidelinesmustbefollowed:
•Avoidextendedidling(beyond10minutes)whenever
possibletomaximizeengineandDieselParticulate
Filter(DPF)life.SeeExhaustDieselParticulateFilter
Regenerationinthissectionformoreinformation.
•Useaminimum40CetanedieselfuelorutilizeCetane
Indeximproversfromareputablemanufacturer.
•Maintainenginecoolingsystem.
•Donotshutenginedownafterextendedidlingperiod.
Drivethevehicleunderloadforseveralmilesatnormal
operatingtemperaturestoburnoffanyaccumulated
carbonandvarnishintheexhaustDPF .
•Consideruseofengineblockheatersandapproved
winterfrontswhereconditionswarrant.
