CLEANING A DRIVE
Overview Wheneveratapeisloadedorunloaded,theread/writeheads
arephysicallycleanedbyabrushlocatedwithinthedrive.However,after
readingandwritingalargeamountofdata(theexactamountvariesby
drivetypeandgeneration)orifreadorwriteerrorsoccur,thedrive
requeststobecleanedwithacleaningcartridge.Therequestismadeby
sendingaTapeAlertmessagetothehost,anddisplayingaContheSCD
Thenotificationisalsopostedtothelibrary’sDriveDetailsscreen
(Figure304onpage437)andtheDLMdrivehealthiconforthedrive
changestoyellow(seeUsingtheDriveHealthIconsonpage275for
additionalinformation).
Usingdriveswithdirtyheadscanreducedriveperformance,decrease
usabletapecapacity,andresultinread/writefailureswhicheventually
interruptdatastorage.
IfyouhaveAutoDriveCleanenabledandthedriveisinapartitionwith
anassociatedcleaningpartition,thesecleaningsareperformed
automatically.SeeCreatingaCleaningPartitiononpage165for
informationaboutconfiguringacleaningpartition.
Itmayalsobepossibletoconfigurethehostsoftwaretoautomatically
cleanthedrives,withacleaningtapestoredinthepartition,whenthe
softwareisnotifiedthatdrivecleaningisnecessary.
Ifnoautomaticcleaningprocessisconfigured,youmustmanuallyclean
thedrive.Ifyouignoreacleaningrequestfortoolong,thelibrary
generatesawarningsystemmessage.
User Privilege Requirements WhenAutoDriveCleanisenabledforthe
storagepartitionandacleaningcartridgeisavailableinthecleaning
partition,cleaningsareperformedautomaticallyanddonotrequireuser
intervention.
IfAutoDriveCleanisnotenabled,anyuserwithoperatorprivilegeswho
isassignedtothepartitionandalluserswithsuperuseroradministrator
privilegescanmanuallycleanadrivewithoutanassociatedcleaning
partitionbyimportingacleaningcartridgeintothestoragepartition’s
entry/exitpoolandusingtheInventory
screentomanuallymovethe
cleaningcartridgetothedrive(see
NoCleaningPartitionPresenton
page441).
Onlyauserwithsuperuseroradministratorprivilegescanmanuallyclean
adrivebyimportingacleaningcartridgedirectlyintoastoragepartition.
