USING DLM TO TEST AN LTO D RIVE
Overview BlueScaleDriveLifecycleManagement(DLM)letsyoumonitor
theDLMhealthinformationofeachLTOdriveinthelibraryandhelpsyou
identifydrivesthatexperienceahighnumberoferrorsorotherproblems
duringoperation.SeeChapter9–UsingDriveLifecycleManagement,
beginningonpage272fordetailedinformationaboutusingDLMto
monitorthehealthofLTOdrives.
IfyoususpectthatadriveisexperiencingproblemsoriftheDrive
LifecycleManagementreportindicatesthatadriveisexperiencing
repeatederrors,youcanusetheDLMDriveHealthVerificationwizardto
testthedrive.Thistest,whenusedinconjunctionwithotherDLMdata
andMLMdata,canhelpyoudetermine whetheradriveorthemediaisthe
sourceoftheerrorsyouareinvestigating.
User Privilege Requirements Onlyauserwithsuperuseroradministrator
privilegescanperformaDLMDriveHealthtest.
Requirements for Using the Wizard BeforeyoucanruntheDLMDrive
HealthVerificationwizard,thefollowingrequirementsmustbemet:
Thedrivemustnotcontainacartridge.
Thedrivemustbecleanedjustbeforebeginningthetest.
AscratchtapethatisthesameLTOgenerationasthedrivebeingtested
mustbeavailableinthepartition’sentry/exitpool.Thescratchtape
healthmustbeGood(green)foranMLM‐enabledcartridgeorUsable
foracartridgethatisnotMLM‐enabled.YoucanuseMLMtodetermine
thehealthofthecartridgescurrentlyinthestoragepartitioncontaining
thedriveyouwanttotest(see GenerateMLMReportsonpage255).
Thescratchcartridgemusthaveabarcodelabel.
Thescratchcartridgemustnotbewrite‐protected.
IfthescratchcartridgeisencryptedusingBlueScale encryption,the
encryptionkeymustbepresentonthelibrary.
Notes: Ifthecartridgehealthisunknown(thatis,itisnotcurrently
listedinthelibrary’sMLMdatabase),thelibraryloadsthe
cartridgeintoadrivetodeterminethehealthbefore
beginningthetest.
Make sure that the scratch tape does not contain data that you need to retain. The
test process overwrites all data on the tape.
The DLM Drive Health test requires the scratch tape used for the testing to be the
same generation as the drive. If the tape is not the same generation as the drive,
the test fails.
The test fails if the scratch cartridge health is not Good or Usable.
