4.27 Part Programming Instructions
In CNC cutting operations, every action is performed according to a program. Each part program is
composed of multiple lines of commands, each line is composed of several function words, and each
function word is composed of a letter followed by a parameter value.
Definitions of Function Words
N Line number, not required. Strictly for operator convenience
G Geometry Function
M Machine Function
L Number of seconds (delay time) or number of loops (looping)
X X-axis coordinate
Y Y-axis coordinate
I The incremental distance between the start point of a circular move and the center point
of a circular move, in the X-axis
J The incremental distance between the start point of a circular move and the center point
of a circular move, in the Y-axis
R The radius of an arc (can be used in lieu of I and J) or kerf width
F Feed rate (cutting speed) for G01, G02 and G03
4.27.1 File Format
Part programs are simple text files written in ASCII format. Any PC may be used with a simple text
editor to create and edit part programs. Programs may be stored on hard disk and copied to a USB
disk.
4.27.2 Program Names
The CNC allows file names of up to 12 characters in total length, including 8 characters for the name, a
decimal point, and 3 characters for the file type extension. File type extensions may be “.TXT”, “.CNC”,
or “.NC”.
The 8 character file name may include both letters and numbers. However, to make it easier for the
operator to load the program, it is recommended to use only numbers.
EXAMPLE FILE NAMES:
PART001.CNC
16533423.TXT
4.27.3 Program Format
The standard programming format is EIA Format. EIA format (Electronic Industries Association)
provides programming conventions for contouring/positioning numerical controlled machines which
comply with the standard practices of the industry.
