Total Nitrogen (TNb) Parameter
TNb stands for Total Nitrogen Bound, which characterizes nitrogen that is attached to
inorganic and organic molecules dissolved in water. Knowledge of the amount of these
substances is important for human health and environmental reasons. Similar to TOC
analysis, the definition of dissolved TNb sets a particle size limit of 0.45 µm. Online TNb
analysis requires the same instrumentation as TOC analysis and can be performed in the
same equipment with a purchasable upgrade. The typical concentration range of interest
is between 1 and 200 mg/L TNb.
MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
Carbon Measurements
The basis of all Carbon measuring methods is the oxidation of the organically bound
carbon to carbon dioxide (CO
2
). This can be done thermally or through a wet chemical
process. The resulting CO
2
is detected and quantified. Thermal oxidation is ideal at
1,200 °C (2192 °F) as all substances are converted without the need for a catalyst or
chemicals. The generated CO
2
is measured in a sensitive and selective NDIR Detector.
