CHAPTER 4: BASIC ANALYZER OPERATION
OVERVIEW
The Sievers TOC-R3 utilizes a back-lit 7” color touchscreen display for all menu selection
activities. This chapter describes the high level principles of operation, Analyzer screens, related
setup tasks, and the operation activities of the Analyzer.
An overview of the menus and screens is shown in “The Analyzer Menus and Screens” on
page 101.
Principles of Operation
The Sievers TOC-R3 is designed for the stable and catalyst-free Online and Offline TOC
(Total Organic Carbon), including specific determination of POC/VOC, and TNb (Total
Nitrogen Bound) analysis in water, suitable for multiple applications. The sum parameters
TOC and TNb are important parameters for water quality. While the TOC provides
information about the organic substance pollution in water, the TNb reflects the nitrogen
content. The thermal oxidation at 1,200 °C (2192 °F) is particularly beneficial for
determining both parameters. At 1,200 °C (2192 °F), all carbon bonds of organic
molecules get destructed and thus enables a complete analysis of TOC by complete
oxidation of all organic sample components without using a catalyst.
Measurement Technique
Carbon Measurements
The fundamental principle of all TOC measuring methods is the oxidation of organically
bound carbon to carbon dioxide (CO
2
), which is then detected and quantified. This can be
achieved through thermal oxidation or a wet chemical process. Thermal oxidation is
preferred at 1,200 °C (2192 °F), as it can cover all substances without the need for a
catalyst or chemicals. The resulting CO
2
is then measured using a sensitive and selective
NDIR detector.
