CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
The Sievers TOC-R3 Online TOC Analyzer (henceforth referred to as Sievers TOC-R3) from
Veolia is an industrial robust Analyzer used to measure the concentration of Total Carbon (TC),
Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), and Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon
(NPOC) in water samples. The Analyzer uses catalyst-free, high temperature combustion
(1200 °C, 2192 °F) oxidation and Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) detection to measure a wide
range of carbon concentrations in complex sample matrices, including those containing high
concentrations of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and particulates with high instrument uptime and
low maintenance.
Optional measurement features include measuring the Purgeable/Volatile Organic Carbon (POC/
VOC) directly through the use of a Photoionization Detector (PID). In addition, the Analyzer can
also measure the Total Bound Nitrogen (TNb) using a simple, lightweight, and small
Electrochemical Detector (ECD).
Veolia strongly recommends that ALL USERS read the Warnings section prior to installing and
operating the Sievers TOC-R3. For more information, see “Warnings” on page 24.
Veolia strongly recommends that only a trained and qualified technician perform installation,
setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the unit.
The information in this manual is organized to guide users through the various activities needed
to install, operate, and maintain the Sievers TOC-R3. First-time users can follow the chapters
sequentially to unpack, install, configure, and operate the Analyzer.
This manual describes typical operational requirements and recommended procedures that are
valid for most applications. Special conditions in operating environments may require
modifications to the recommendations in this manual. Specific instructions provided by Technical
Support or your local service provider supersede the information provided in this manual.
