6-6 Inlets and probes
Fitting the probe tip to the probe
To fit the probe tip to the probe
1. With the probe in the vertical position, fit the probe tip over the end of
the probe.
2. Use a jeweler’s screwdriver to tighten the tip securing screw.
Loading sample into the sample cup
The probe accommodates these two types of sample cup:
• Type C – A deep sample cup for use with samples of medium volatility.
Place the sample at the bottom of the cup to reduce the heating effect of
the ion source. You can then evaporate the sample into the ion source by
using the probe heater, if necessary.
• Type D – A shallow sample cup for use with less volatile and thermally
labile samples. The probe does not need to be heated, because the
sample is close to the heated ion source.
Warning: The probe components can be contaminated with toxic
materials. Wear nitrile gloves at all times while handling the
components.
