System troubleshooting
There are a few basic instructions for performing system troubleshooting:
• Examine the system, considering likely causes of the problem.
Unresponsive instruments can indicate that power or signal cables are
disconnected or improperly connected. Similarly, a fluid or vacuum leak
can indicate defective plumbing connections.
• Compare current system operation with the way the system operated
before the problem arose. To identify normal operating conditions,
maintain a daily log noting overall system performance and parameters.
Specifically, measure the performance of individual instruments using
known samples, preferably the ones used for instrument acceptance.
You must know, for example, when system-tuning parameter values
approximate those specified at the time a test sample was previously
run, or that the lens settings needed to achieve optimum sensitivity are
higher than those specified before. A need to specify extreme values to
attain good results implies that some part of the system requires
attention.
• Consult the troubleshooting information contained in tables on the
following pages. The tables identify possible causes of a symptom and
suggest corrective actions. If you trace a problem to a system device or
instrument other than the Autospec Premier (for example the GC or
autosampler), consult the operator's guide for that instrument.
Component hardware troubleshooting
The following tables provide suggestions for resolving most hardware
problems.
No peaks in the Tune window (no ion beam)
Possible cause Corrective action

all lenses affect the beam as
