AutoSpec functionality G-7
Rotate 3 lens
The Rotate 3 lens is used to rotate the beam before it enters the second ESA
assembly (ESA 2). It is controlled by Rotate 3 on the Tune window’s Lenses 2
tab.
Z Deflect 3 lens
The Z Deflect 3 lens is used to deflect the ion beam before entering the second
electric sector. It is controlled by Z Deflect 3 on the Tune window’s Lenses 1
tab.
Z Focus 3 lens
The Z Focus 3 lens is used to focus the diverging beam in the Z-plane onto the
collector slit. It is controlled by Z Focus 3 on the Tune window’s Lenses 1 tab.
The Z Focus 3 lens improves sensitivity at low resolution, but above
approximately 5000 resolution it has a detrimental effect on peak shape.
See “Z Focus 2 lens” on page G-6.
NRMS gas cell (optional)
The NRMS gas cell is used for NRMS (Neutralization-Reionization Mass
Spectrometry) studies, in conjunction with the MIKES (Mass-analyzed Ion
Kinetic Energy Spectrometry) cell.
MIKES gas cell (optional)
The MIKES gas cell is used for Mass-analyzed Ion Kinetic Energy
Spectrometry studies.
MIKES slit (optional)
The MIKES slit is a hot-wire slit. It is used to decrease the mass range of the
ion beam entering the MIKES cell.
Second ESA assembly (ESA 2)
The second ESA assembly focuses ions of selected energy onto the collector
slit, and enables MIKES studies to be performed. It also rejects metastable
fragment ions and so reduces background noise.
