G-6 Theory and principles of operation
Z Deflect 2 lens
The Z Deflect 2 lens is used to deflect the ion beam before entering the flight
tube. It is controlled by Z Deflect 2 on the Tune window’s Lenses 1 tab.
Z Focus 2 lens
The Z Focus 2 lens is used to achieve maximum transmission of ions through
the flight tube. It is controlled by Z Focus 2 on the Tune window’s Lenses 1
tab.
The Z Focus 2 lens improves sensitivity at low resolution, but above
approximately 20000 resolution it has a detrimental effect on peak shape.
See “Z Focus 3 lens” on page G-7.
Rotate 2 lens
The Rotate 2 lens is used to rotate the beam before it enters the magnetic
sector. It is controlled by Rotate 2 on the Tune window’s Lenses 2 tab.
Curve 2 lens
The Curve 2 lens is used to compensate for the curvature effect caused by the
magnetic field as the ion beam passes through the flight tube. It is controlled
by Curve 2 on the Tune window’s Lenses 2 tab.
Magnet
The magnet is the instrument’s analyzer. At any given magnetic field only a
narrow mass window will be transmitted through into the Third Field-Free
Region.
Z Focus 3 lens assembly
The Z Focus 3 lens assembly is located in the collector housing, immediately
after the flight tube.
Curve 3 lens
Like the Curve 2 lens, the Curve 3 lens is used to compensate for the
curvature effect caused by the magnetic field as the ion beam passes through
the flight tube. It is controlled by Curve 3 on the Tune window’s Lenses 2 tab.
