DRIVE UNIT
Drive Unit
Drive Unit
This truck has independent drive units coupled to each
drive wheel. Each unit is totally enclosed and oil filled
to give maximum lubrication to both bearings and
gears.
Wear appropriate items, such as safety glasses and
steel-toed shoes whenever performing maintenance
work. Do not place fingers, hands or arms through
mast or position them at pinch points.
In this section you may be required to lift and block the
truck and mast or raise and lower different components
for removal and installation. Make sure lifting device
and sling are sufficiently rated to withstand the weight
being lifted. Never work under or around a truck that is
not properly secured. Refer to truck Data Plate for truck
weight information.
It will be necessary to disconnect and remove the bat-
tery from the truck, disconnect tilt cylinders from the
mast, disconnect electrical connections and hydraulic
lines. Control of Hazardous Energy section provides in-
formation for performing the above procedures along
with some additional information on other procedures
dealing with truck maintenance. This section should be
read and reviewed prior to performing drive unit main-
tenance as outlined in this section.
Inspect Drive Unit
Before attempting to replace the drive tire or remove
the drive unit, complete a visual/physical inspection of
the following:
• Inspect drive unit for leaks.
• Check fill plug, drain plug, breather plug and level
check plug for leaks.
• Check drive unit for proper oil level.
• Check drive tires for cuts, gouges and excessive
wear.
• Physically check torque values on drive tire fasten-
ers.
Drive Unit Lubrication
The drive unit has a capacity of approximately 800 ml
(0.85 quart) of 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. Refer to Lu-
brication & Adjustment for lubricant information.
Remove the drain plug (3) to completely drain the unit.
To fill, remove fill plug (1) and add gear oil until present
at the level check plug (2). Refer to Figure 16097-05.
