CYLINDERS
Sideshifter Cylinder

 M8.9-1055-004
To make these tools, weld or braze a headless 4.0 mm
self-tapping (No. 8 metal) screw to the end of a screw-
driver. The screwdriver must have at least 150.0 mm
(6.0 in) of shank length with no larger than 4.0 mm
(0.156 in) shank diameter. After attaching the screw to
the screwdriver, grind off excess weld to a diameter of
4.0 mm (0.156 in). Wrap the shank with electrical tape
from the tip of the screw to the screwdriver handle.
Do not scratch or nick the cylinder bore or seal
grooves.
4. Carefully remove the rod assembly from the cylin-
der.
5. Place the rod assembly in a soft-jawed vise or be-
tween two blocks of wood to facilitate seal removal.
Pry the seals up and cut to remove (Refer to Figure
16059).
Sideshifter Cylinder Reassembly
1. To allow the seals to slide easily over the piston/
retainer chamfer, polish it carefully with an emery
cloth.
2. Thoroughly wash all components with cleaning sol-
vent and lubricate new seals and rings with petro-
leum jelly.
3. Ensure the u-cup seals are installed correctly; if
placed backward, they will not work properly. For
proper seal direction, refer to Figure 16061.
4. When installing new seals, hook one side of each
one in the groove and push it over the piston or
retainer.
5. Apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the inside of the
cylinder shell, piston seals and retainers.
6. Insert the rod assembly into the cylinder shell. Use
a rubber mallet to tap the rod end if resistance oc-
curs.
7. Carefully drive the retainers into the shell far
enough to facilitate installation of retaining rings.
8. Pull the rod out on one side to full extension; this
will allow the retainer to be in position for installing
the spiral snap ring. Repeat this process on the
other end.
