Monitoring
Transformer Nameplate Application Description
The SEL-2414 Thermal Element is designed to monitor the thermal condition of
various transformer configurations. Set ETHERM to match the type of trans-
former(s) that the thermal element is monitoring.
ETHERM = 1
Set ETHERM = 1 to monitor a three-phase transformer with one set of high-side
windings, and one set of low-side windings. Also use this mode if the transformer
has a tertiary that is buried (i.e., no power drawn from it). See Figure 5.10 for a
sample one-line diagram with the voltage, current, and temperature measure-
ments. The thermal element does not use the voltage measurements; these are
optional and if included, will provide more metering data. The setting
TMWNOM defines the nominal voltage of the winding to which the current mea-
surements are connected, whether that is the high-side winding, or the low-side
winding.
In this mode, the SEL-2414 only requires measured current from one phase to
determine the load on the transformer. If more than one phase measurement is
provided as shown in Figure 5.10, the thermal model will use the highest mea-
sured phase current to determine the load on the transformer.
ETHERM = 3
Set ETHERM = 3 to monitor a set of three single-phase transformers. See
Figure 5.11 for a sample one-line diagram with the voltage, current, and temper-
ature measurements. The thermal element does not use the voltage measure-
ments; these are optional and if included, will provide more metering data. The
setting TMWNOM defines the nominal voltage of the windings to which the cur-
rent measurements are connected, whether that is the high-side winding, or the
low-side winding. There must be one current measurement from each of the three
transformers.
