Chapter 3
Installing JUNOSe Software
The JUNOSe software resides on a nonvolatile storage (NVS) card located in the switch
route processor (SRP) module. Each SRP module is shipped with an NVS card that
contains a software release. Each SRP module is shipped with an NVS card that
contains a software release. New software releases are available for download from
the Juniper Networks website at http://www.juniper.net/customers/support. You can use
the downloaded image bundle to create your own software CDs.
CAUTION: See the Release Notes for extra information about installing and upgrading
the software.
This chapter provides information on how to install a new software release on a
router and contains the following sections:
■ Overview on page 125
■ Platform Considerations on page 127
■ Installing Software When a Firewall Exists on page 127
■ Installing Software When a Firewall Does Not Exist on page 132
■ Copying Release Files from One Router to Another on page 140
■ Upgrading Systems That Are Operating with Two SRP Modules on page 140
■ Upgrading from Release 5.1.1 or Lower-Numbered Releases on page 142
■ Downgrading JUNOSe Software on page 144
Overview
If the router contains only one SRP module, we recommend you divert traffic to
another router before installing a new software release because the router is
unavailable during the installation process. Depending on whether a firewall separates
the router from the network host, you can then complete the appropriate software
installation. (See “Installing Software When a Firewall Exists” on page 127 or “Installing
Software When a Firewall Does Not Exist” on page 132.) However, if the router contains
two SRP modules, you can upgrade the software while the system is operating. (See
“Upgrading Systems That Are Operating with Two SRP Modules” on page 140.)
When installing new JUNOSe software, you must copy the contents of the release
files to a network host and transfer the release files to at least one router in the
network. Depending on the network configuration, you can copy the release files
