Power Steering
Poor, Erratic, or No Assist
Cause Special Information
Drive belt Worn, broken or out of adjustment
Low fluid level
Air in system
Air leak in lines, pump, or air from installation. 
Refer to Section 9A for bleeding procedure.
Leaking hoses Refer to Section 10A for bleeding procedure.
Steering cables and/or steering helm
Cable or helm partially frozen from rust or
corrosion; cable over-lubricated; improper cable
installation.
Binding in stern drive unit Refer to appropriate Stern Drive Service Manual
Restriction in hydraulic hoses Causes a loss of pressure
Control valve not positioned properly, not
balanced properly, or the mounting nut is loose
Mounting bracket adjusting screw loose or
mounting tube is loose
Faulty pump Flow control valve may be sticking
Worn piston ring or scored housing bore in cylinder. Causes loss of pressure
Leaking valve body or loose fitting spool
