Carton Considerations
Folds
If cartons are pressed together too forcefully, it becomes difficult to erect the
carton in the carton machine because the surfaces of the cartons do not have
sufficient capacity to re-expand. This defect becomes evident if you try to open a
carton with your hands.

Fiber Direction
Machine cartons require the fiber direction of the carton always to run
perpendicular to the longitudinal seam. This is also necessary to ensure
there are no problems picking up the cartons.
Grooving
If the grooving of a carton is bent 180°, the surface above the grooving must
remain undamaged and a clean ridge must form on the inside. The following
requirements must also be met:
• No tears visible on the outer cover of the carton.
• No pressure creases next to the inner ridge on the inside.
• No crushed sections along the inner ridge.
• No tears along the inner ridge.
The deciding factor for these requirements is the adjustments made to the
grooving tool (provided by the carton manufacturer) for finished carton quality.
Scoring
Scoring of the four groves that run parallel to the longitudinal seam is a
requirement for machine cartons. A scoring angle of at least 120° must be
achieved. For safety reasons, however, the greatest possible angle up to 180°
should not be attempted.
