System Configuration
Disposable Starling Sensors
Starling Sensors have a double-electrode configuration, designed to carry out two roles
simultaneously, as follows:
To deliver the continuous low-amplitude alternating electrical current supplied by the
Starling Monitor.
To sample, at a very fast rate, the signal emanating from the patient - the Bioreactance
signal.
These signals are then analyzed by the Starling software algorithms, which determine the
stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO) and other hemodynamic information
acquired by the Starling Monitor.
The disposable Starling Sensors (illustrated in Figure 2-11) are supplied non-sterile in a single
pack containing the following:
4 double sensors (complete with attached sensor lead and connector)
Each pair of sensors is mounted on an adhesive pad with a protective film covering the
adhesive underside.
A sensor lead is affixed to each sensor at one end; the lead has a dedicated connector at
the other end, for connection to the Starling Patient Cable.
The connectors are color-coded; 2 positive (red), and 2 negative (black).
