Terminology

ThelinkisconfiguredandmanagedusingaPC,themanagingcomputerconnectedto

Wewilloccasionallyneedtodistinguishbetweenthesitetowhichthemanaging
computerisco nnected,andthesecondsite,whentheyarenotnecessarilyAorB.The
formerwillbecalledthemanagingsiteandthelatter,theover theairsite.Whichis
which,isalwaysdeterminedbythelocationofthemanagingcomputer.
RADWIN2000supportsthreeconnectionmethodsforthemanagingcomputer:
•Local‐adirectpeertopeerconnectionbetweentheEthernetportsonthemanaging
computerandtheIDUorPoEdevice.Localconnectionisalwaysreadwrite.
•Network‐themanagingcomputerandthesiteAIDUorPoEdevicebelongtoaLAN
andcommunicatethrougharouterorswitch
•Overtheair‐themanagingcomputerconnectstositeBviatheairinterface
ThemanagingcomputermaybeconnectedtothelinkthroughanIDUoraPoEdevice.
Inwhat follows,whereeverwerefertoanIDUitincludesPoEdevicesunlessstatedoth
erwise.Typically,ifweneedtorefertoanIDUassuch,wewilluseamodelnamesuch
asIDUC.
Thetermsuplinkanddownlink,originatefromthefieldofSatellitecommunications.In
abackhaulorISPcontext,uplinkisfromtheusertothenetworkanddownlinkisfrom
thenetworktotheuser.
