Scope
ThedescriptionofRADWINEthernetRinginthisChapteriscompletelygeneric:BothWinLink
1000andRADWIN2000linksmayparticipateinanEthernetring.
WhatisanEthernetRing
AnEthernetringconsistsofseveralnodesconnectedbyhops(links).Loopsarenotallowed
withEthernet;thereforeonehopisaRingProtectionLink(RPL)which“blocks”Ethernet
traffic.Intheeventoffailureinthering,theRingProtectionLinkunblocksandEthernet
trafficintheringisrestored.
Someterminology:
•NormalStateallmemberlinksarefunctionalexcepttheRPLwhichisblocked.
•Blocked‐theairlinkisupbutEthernettrafficisnottransmittedacrossthelink.The
EthernetservicepanelfortheRPLintheRADWINManagerislabeledIdle
•Unblocked‐EthernettrafficistransmittedacrosstheRPL.TheEthernetservicepanel
fortheRPLintheRADWINManagerislabeledActive
•ProtectionStateamemberlinkisbrokenandtheRPLpassesEthernettraffic
•RingProtectionLink‐asdescribedabove
•RingLink‐anymemberlinkcontrolledbytheRPL
IndependentLink‐notsubjecttoringprotection
Caution
VLANIDsareusedbyRADWINproductsinthreeseparatecontexts:
ManagementVLAN,TrafficVLANandEthernetRing .Itisrecommendedthat
youusedifferentVLANIDsforeachcontext.
