5.8.8 External Router Control
With SW V2.1 or newer, external router control has been added to the feature
list. This allows communication and interactions between a Router Control
System (RCS) and the OnAir 3000 console.
There are several Router Control Systems on the market.
As an example, OnAir 3000 consoles have been successfully integrated with
VSM (Virtual Studio Manager), of L-S-B Broadcast Technologies GmbH.
The console does not communicate directly with the router. Commands and
status information are exchanged using the Pro-Bel SW-P-08 protocol over
TCP/IP socket communication between the console and the RCS. The console
acts as a remote device in the Pro-Bel naming convention while the RCS is
the controller.
The RCS initiates the connection to a specific console running in a certain
facility, on a given IP address and port number. Since the RCS knows the con-
sole’s location, the amount of information provided to the console is reduced
(name, crosspoints, source names, and destination association names). The
Pro-Bel control extension runs on the core instead of on the desk, since label
transfer must also work on systems without a desk.
In A/B desk mode where two desks share one common core, two sessions
are required, each on its own port number, but both on the same IP address.
From the RCS’s point of view, the two desks A and B are separate consoles.
Within a session, up to eight redundant RCS servers can connect to a console,
and up to 16 external inputs can be used by one console at a time.
