Chapter 11 SpO
2
Monitoring
11.1 Overview
The SpO
2
plethysmography measures the arterial SpO
2
, namely, the percentage of the oxyhemoglobin count.
The SpO
2
is measured with the pulse oximetry; a continuous noninvasive method measuring how many of the lights
emitted from the sensor (light source) can penetrate the patient’s tissues (fingers or ears) and reach the receiver.
The monitor measures the following parameters:
Comen SpO
2
, Masimo SpO
2
and Nellcor SpO
2
:
Arterial SpO
2
: the ratio of the oxyhemoglobin to the sum of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin (functional
arterial SpO
2
);
Pleth waveform: a visible indication of the patient's pulse;
PR (calculated from pleth waveform): the patient's pulse count per minute;
PI (perfusion index): the pulsatile blood flow value (PI measurement is unavailable for Nellcor SpO
2
).
If there are any carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), methemoglobin (MetHb) or dye dilution chemicals, the
SpO
2
value will have a deviation.
11.1.1 Identification of SpO
2
Type
You can use two types of SpO
2
modules simultaneously. SpO
2
measurements are marked with SpO
2
and SpO
2
B, and
the type of SpO
2
module is displayed in SpO
2
menu. Appearance and logo of SpO
2
modules are as below:
Comen SpO
2
: round cable interface; no manufacturer's logo.
Masimo SpO
2
: round cable interface; logo: .
Nellcor SpO
2
: round cable interface; logo: .
The information about wavelength range and maximum optical output power of the sensor is useful to the clinician
for some therapies, for example, photodynamic therapy.
The Comen SpO
2
sensor can measure a wavelength of 660nm (red LED) or 905nm (IR LED).
The Masimo SpO
2
sensor can measure a wavelength of 660nm (red LED) or 905nm (IR LED).
The Nellcor SpO
2
sensor can measure a wavelength of 660nm (red LED) or 900nm (IR LED).
The maximum optical output power of the sensor is lower than 15mW.
