Chapter 15 CO
2
Monitoring
15.1 Overview
The monitor uses the CO
2
gas analyzer to monitor the patient’s respiration gas and control patient’s ventilation.
There are two methods of measuring the CO
2
in the patient’s airway:
Sidestream measurement method: portion of a patient’s respired gases from the sampling site, through a
sampling tube, to the sensor within CO
2
module for analysis.
Mainstream measurement method: the CO
2
module is placed onto the patient’s respiratory airway directly for
analysis.
In the two methods described above the measurement principle is Infrared spectrography. When an IR light beam
is passed through a gas sample containing CO
2
, the infrared absorption energy is calibrated to accurately reflect CO
2
concentration in the sample gas.
CO
2
measurement is intended for adult, pediatric and neonate patients. .

Module
Masimo Mainstream Module:
The LED located on the IRMA probe is used to signal the following conditions:

Masimo Sidestream Module:
The light emitting gas inlet (LEGI), detects the presence of a NomoLine sampling line and presents color coded status
information:
