8.2.1 Overpressure safety
Under normal operating conditions, a standard glovebox is designed for a pressure range
between min. -15 mbar and max. + 15 mbar (-1.5 kPa and +1.5 kPa)
Gloves of MBRAUN gloveboxes have a safety function for high pressure protec-
tion.
Emergency situations, e.g. resulting from a valve or component malfunction can cause
extreme pressure conditions in the glovebox. At pressure values lower than approx.
-20mbar (-2.0 kPa) or higher than approx. +20 mbar (+2.0 kPa), the gloves will separate
from the feedthroughs.
This safety feature of the gloves is permitted if harmless gases and harmless process
materials are used.
Overpressure safety valve
If toxic or harmful gases are used, an overpressure safety valve is required. This valve
should be connected to a safe on-site exhaust system, which generates an audible /
visual alarm in case of a fault.
Depending on the type of gases and process materials used, as well as on the processes
applied, additional equipment may be necessary:
¡ External purge feature, particle absorber (PA - systems), high-temperature processes
– all of which can influence the box pressure
¡ If using pneumatic parts inside the glovebox or enclosure, a risk of overpressure due
to leakage may always be present
Additional cooling equipment, pressure controls or safety features may be necessary.
Support
Contact MBRAUN Service for support if overpressure safety is required.
8.2.2 Harmful or hazardous process materials
Special precautions are required if hazardous and/or harmful processes, material or
gases are to be used inside the glovebox:
Use a solvent filter.
Implement an automatic purging system.
Refer to chapter "Safety" and determine your required MBRAUN safety classification
for operation the system or contact MBRAUN Service.
8.2.3 Process-related particle formation
In case of intensive particle formation in the box:
¡ Saturated particle filters reduce the gas flow and increase the differential pressure of
the blower.
¡ MBRAUN recommends the use of differential pressure gauge to monitor the filter
congestion.
