3 Safety
3.1 Intended use
This MBRAUN inert gas system is intended for professional use only. It must only be op-
erated by appropriately skilled and trained operators.
By default, operation with nitrogen, argon, helium or CDA gas or as mixture is mandatory.
Operation with other gases or gas mixtures of non-reactive gases is possible. However
this can in certain cases require a modification of the system or additional protective
measures.
By default, if an antechamber is used for transfer in material/substances into the glove-
box/enclosure, the completion of a full antechamber cycle is mandatory (otherwise the O
2
concentration within the glovebox/enclosure would rise to a level which causes system
response).
Product protection
The purpose of the MBRAUN inert gas system is to create and maintain a pure inert gas
atmosphere inside a hermetically sealed enclosure.
The inert gas system is designed to protect products and production processes inside a
glovebox or enclosure from moisture and oxygen by circulating the working gas through a
gas purifier in a closed loop. The gas purification system is designed to be operated with
an attached, hermetically sealed glovebox or enclosure, through which working gas is cir-
culated.
Personal protection
The inert gas system was customized by MBRAUN in consultation with the operating
company to work with substances of MB hazard classes
10
MB-HC-II , MB-HC-III , MB-
HC-IV or MB-HC-EX (inside). The system is intended to protect the operators from poten-
tial hazards that may arise from substances handled and processed inside the glovebox.
MBRAUN standard inert gas systems are not designed to protect operators.
By default, they are not equipped with safety features that minimise the risk of malfunc-
tion or faulty operation during processing hazardous substances in hazard classes MB-
HC-II, MB-HC-III, MB-HC-IV or MB-HC-EX (inside).
If the intended processes involve one or more of the following items, appropriate meas-
ures must be taken to protect operators:
¡ Substances that can cause dangerous situations if they come into contact with ambi-
ent air in case of system malfunction.
¡ Substances which are easily flammable or explosive if they come into contact with
ambient air in case of system malfunction
¡ Pharmaceutical or nuclear applications
¡ Extremely toxic or harmful materials
Contact MBRAUN Service if the intended process involves one of the categories listed
above, or if questions arise concerning the need of personal protection.
