12 Maintenance
12.1 Introduction
In order to maintain a high safety/quality standard for a closed inert gas system, regular
inspection and maintenance of the complete system is required – including the integrated
additional components from 3rd party manufacturers.
During the inspection and maintenance work, the circulation pipe work, the glovebox or
the pressurized gas connections are open to the environment/laboratory room. At this
time the system protection is not available.
This results in specific risks which depend on the type and degree of hazard of the pro-
cess materials used in the system e.g.:
¡ Health risk, if toxic and unhealthy substances or gases used in the system are not
isolated and get into the laboratory room.
¡ Risk of suffocation by inert gases, if the system is not thoroughly prepared for open-
ing and the oxygen content is lower than 19%.
¡ Fire danger is increased if ignitable substances reach ambient air and react with each
other or with the oxygen of ambient air.
Due to these risks, MBRAUN recommends that users create a specific standard opera-
tion procedure (SOP) and to implement it into the process. You should be aware that in
case of emergency the procedure must be clear for everybody involved in the process.
According to the analysis of the substances used in the system and their reactive poten-
tial, the procedure during maintenance and disposal of the substances and materials
must take safety considerations into account. Internal safety requirements and alarm
plans should also be considered.
Ensure that inspection and maintenance work is done thoroughly and is documented, to
maintain the high safety standard of the MBRAUN system.
DANGER
Improper maintenance work
Risk of damage or injury!
► Only MBRAUN Service personnel or properly trained/qualified individuals may per-
form maintenance, repair and service other than described in this manual.
NOTICE
Risk of damage
► Don't do maintenance work not described in the operating manual.
12.1.1 Document inspection and maintenance
Carefully observe the inspection and maintenance intervals and document all work in the
service and maintenance log (always one service booklet per system is attached).
