3.9 Safe handling of solvents, chemicals and gases
Solvents, chemicals and gases used in the system are not supplied by MBRAUN. Any
substances handled within the system are provided and applied by the operator.
The safe handling of substances is the sole responsibility of the operating company and
its safety managers:
¡ Note section "Intended Use" as well as the information about risk assessment con-
tained in this section.
¡ Chemicals may react uncontrollably with each other, leading to unwanted and/or un-
known substances, which may cause additional risks.
¡ Solvents may destroy gaskets of the glovebox, as well as other system components
like freezer gaskets or the rubber material of the gloves. Solvent vapour is also ad-
sorbed by the reactor material and may diminish its capacity for water vapor.
¡ Materials used may be flammable, explosive and/or toxic or may acquire these prop-
erties after being processed in the glovebox.
There is a risk of explosion for substances whose self-ignition temperature is ≤ 60 °C if
they come into contact with oxygen (e.g. with ambient air!) or with high temperature sur-
faces on devices used in the workspace.
¡ This is especially relevant for the use of solvents or for hydrogen concentrations of
≥4%.
¡ The user, working at the glovebox, and the safety representatives are both respons-
ible for ensuring that the maximum concentration limit is not exceeded.
¡ When using combustible or explosive gases, additional safety features are required
that are not components of a MBRAUN standard glovebox system.
¡ Exceeding the hydrogen concentration of 10% in the regeneration gas causes the re-
actor to overheat during the regeneration process.
During the handling and processing of gases, solvents and other chemicals be sure to fol-
low the guidelines for safe handling of these substances:
► Ensure that the “Control of Substance Hazardous to Health” (COSHH, UK) guideline
and the “European Directive 2006/42/EC on machinery” and any other applicable
laws and rules are followed.
► Observe relevant safety regulations as well as material safety data sheets (MSDS)
and additional recommendations, provided by the supplier.
► Wear personal protective equipment (PPE): protective safety mask, protective
gloves and safety glasses.
► Mark all containers and supply lines of chemicals (i.e. containers of media and
waste) with appropriate labels and warning signs.
► When working with organic solvents inside the glovebox at regular intervals, the sys-
tem should be equipped with a solvent filter.
► Contact MBRAUN for further details if there are special reasons for not following
these instruction.
