2 Inert gas technology
2.1 Overview
Inert gas technology is used to protect processes and materials especially from moisture
and/or oxygen. With special features that are beyond the standard delivery it can also
protect environment and personnel.
An inert gas system works on the principle of gas circulation in a closed loop. Once star-
ted, the circulation is an ongoing process until the filter material is saturated.
A typical general inert gas system comprises the following main components:
¡ Glovebox or enclosure ("box")
¡ Gas purifier
¡ Antechamber
A box is a hermetically sealed enclosure. It provides a working space that is totally separ-
ated from the outside environment. A box is designed to maintain an artificial atmosphere
(working gas; e.g., pure nitrogen, pure argon, CDA). Integrated filters remove particles.
When protecting processes or materials, the box is operated with overpressure relative to
the atmosphere outside. When the environment or personnel should be protected, the
box is operated with negative pressure.
A gas purifier contains a reactor that removes moisture and oxygen from the contamin-
ated working gas from the box. The purified working gas flows back to the box. As a res-
ult, a pure gas atmosphere is maintained. The system is Siemens PLC-controlled and op-
erated using a touch panel.
An antechamber is used to transfer material out of and into the box while simultaneously
maintaining the working gas conditions inside the box.
Besides the standard equipment, optional add-on functions and add-on components are
available. Contact MBRAUN for detailed information.
