3.8 Process materials
3.8.1 Classification and assessment of substances
According to directives of the European Commission, the safety representatives for the
system must include the classification and assessment of the risk of applied substances.
MBRAUN recommends to follow also that sections of the directive in areas where the law
is not applicable.
The risk assessment delivers input for the following conditions:
¡ Substances should be processed in overpressure or negative pressure operation
¡ Additional safety measures are required during operation in negative pressure for per-
sonal protection.
Both, the classification and assessment are necessary for the following actions:
¡ To identify required system modifications and safety equipment
¡ To define the SOP’s for a safe processing of the substances
The assessment and classification can be conducted with known substances, taking into
account the H and P statements (R and S statements) or the OEL level. See http://
www.hse.gov.uk/
Unknown risks can arise from unexpected chemical reactions of process materials. De-
pending on the degree of hazard, there may be consequences for health and the environ-
ment.
If process materials are used in large quantities or with high particle content or contact
time, additional risks may arise. Personal injury and/or material damage may occur.
Contact MBRAUN if a substance, that is intended to be entirely processed in the system,
exceeds the following values:
¡ Quantity: > 1 kg
¡ Condition: very dusty / powdered
¡ Contact time with responsive partner material: > 15 min/day while substances are
processed in the glovebox
Depending on the hazard class, various system modifications and safety equipment may
be necessary.
