7A ECO Mode
7A.1 Overview
The ECO Mode feature allows energy savings when the system is idle, for example on
nights and weekends. It also allows noise emissions to be reduced.
When configured, this feature is automatically activated at a specified time (e.g. daily at
5:00 pm).
7A.2 Glovebox operation with the ECO Mode feature
In standard operation, in addition to other functions, the box pressure control system uses
the vacuum pump to reduce the box pressure.
In ECO Mode, the box pressure control uses an additional valve (VDA) which is posi-
tioned downstream of the blower outlet. This solution allows overpressure-only operation
of the glovebox during ECO Mode.
However, when the ECO Mode feature is deactivated, box's standard pressure control
mechanism is reactivated.
The operator can configure a reduced blower frequency for ECO Mode operation. The
vacuum pump and box light can also be configured to automatically switch off when ECO
Mode is activated.
The minimum settings for the blower frequency ( = blower drive) must be a value that en-
sures a gas circulation of at least ten times the glovebox volume over one hour time un-
der all conditions. Otherwise the quality of the glovebox atmosphere will be diminished.
Energy can be saved by reducing the blower frequency and switching off the vacuum
pump(s). The working pressure limits for ECO Mode are set automatically by the system
within a range of ≥ + 2 mbar (lower operating limit) and ≥ + 3 mbar (upper operating
limit
14
), with a difference of at least 1 mbar between the both values. When ECO Mode is
deactivated, the operating limits set in the box parameters are automatically reapplied.
The actual quality (indicated by the H
2
O and O
2
ppm values) of the glovebox atmosphere
determines the minimum frequency of the circulation blower in ECO Mode.
Example:
¡ If the ppm values of H
2
O or O
2
concentration are high, e. g. > 500 ppm, the quality of
the box atmosphere is low. The blower frequency must therefore remain high and
should not be set to the minimum possible value.
¡ Conversely, if the ppm values of H
2
O or O
2
concentration are low, e. g. < 1 ppm, the
quality of the box atmosphere is high. The blower frequency can therefore be low,
and can be set to the minimum possible value.
If the oxygen or moisture concentration in the glovebox exceeds an adjustable limit (pre-
set value: 10 ppm) in ECO Mode, the controller automatically changes the blower drive
from the ECO Mode frequency back to the standard frequency. When the oxygen or
moisture concentration drops to less than 1ppm, the blower returns to the frequency that
was set for ECO Mode.
14
This limit remains unchanged if it is set to a value ≥ 3 mbar. In case of a lower value, the control-
ler automatically sets a value of 3 mbar if ECO Mode is activated.
