EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergMaritimearefrequentlyconnectedtotheship's
localareanetwork.Connectinganycomputertoanetworkwillalwaysexposethedata
onthatcomputertoallothercomputersconnectedtothenetwork.Severalthreatsmay
immediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviourofthecomputer,forexampleby
installingunwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:
•Thelikelihoodthatanyremoteconnectionwilldoanyoftheabove.
•Thedamagedoneifaremoteconnectionsucceedsdoingthis.
BecauseKongsbergMaritimehasnoinformationregardingthecompletesystem
installationonanyvessel,wecannotestimatethethreatlevelandtheneedfornetwork
security.Forthisreason,wecannotacceptresponsibilityfornetworksecurity.Systems
providedbyKongsbergMaritimeareregardedasstand-alonesystems,eventhoughthey
maybeconnectedtoanetworkforsensorinterfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Important
NosafetyapplicationsareinstalledonanyKongsbergMaritimecomputerstoprotect
theseagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccessfromexternalusers.
SecuringtheEK15itselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplacethatsecuresall
computersinthenetwork,includingphysicalaccessbytrainedandtrustedusers.This
mustalwaysbeataskforthecustomertoimplement.
