inthisboundarylayermaybelaminaror
turbulent.

Theturbulentowisadisorderlyow
pattern,fullofeddies.
Theboundarylayerincreasesinthickness
whenitbecomesturbulent.Theboundary
layeristhinintheforwardpartofthevesselhull,andincreasesasitmovesaft.The
thicknessdependsonshipsspeedandontheroughnessofthehull.Allobjectssticking
outfromthehull,ordentsinthehull,willdisturbtheowandwillincreasethethickness
oftheboundarylayer.Whentheowspeedishigh,theturbulencecanbeviolentenough
todestroytheintegrityofthewater.Smallvoidsorcavitiesinthewaterwilloccurand
thisiscalledcavitation.
