Electro-StaticDischarge(ESD)
WhatisESD?
Electro-StaticDischarge(ESD)isthetransferofanelectrostaticchargebetweentwo
bodiesatdifferentelectrostaticlevels,causedeitherbydirectcontactorinductionby
anelectrostaticeld.Thepassingofachargethroughanelectronicdevicecancause
localisedoverheating,anditcanalso“puncture”insulatinglayerswithinthestructureof
thedevice.Thismaydepositaconductiveresidueofthevaporisedmetalonthedevice,
andthuscreateashortcircuit.Thismayresultinacatastrophicfailure,ordegraded
performanceofthedevice.
ESDprotection
Sensitiveelectroniccircuitboardsmustbetransportedandstoredinprotectivepacking
bags.Thecircuitboardsmustnotbetransportedorstoredclosetostrongelectrostatic,
electro-magneticorradioactiveelds.
Ifitisnecessarytoopenandtouchthecircuitboardinsidetheprotectivebag,then
thefollowingprecautionsmustbetaken:
1Theworkingareamustbecoveredbyanapprovedconductiveservicematthathas
aresistanceofbetween50kΩand2MΩ,andisconnecteddirectlytoareliable
earthpointviaitsearthingcord.
2Theservicepersonnelinvolvedmustwearawristbandindirectcontactwiththe
skin,connectedtotheservicemat.
3Printedcircuitboardsmustbeplacedontheconductiveservicematduring
installation,maintenanceetc.
4If,foranyreason,itisnecessarytomovethecircuitboardfromtheconductive
servicemat,itmustbeplacedinanapprovedantistatictransportationcontainer(e.g.
staticshieldingbag)beforetransportation.
5Duringinstallationandservicing,allelectricalequipment(solderingirons,test
equipmentetc.)mustbeearthed.
Disposal
Attheendoftheproductlifetime,allKongsbergMaritimeproductsmustbedisposedin
anenvironmentalfriendlyway.
