This chapter provides more in-depth information on certain areas and function of the
XL8.
Spatial imaging system (SIS™)
Conventional consoles can be used for three channel mixing. However, the methods for
doing so are complicated and unorthodox, forcing the engineer to work in
unaccustomed ways and limiting creative flexibility, thus making use by visiting
operators impractical. The spatial imaging system (SIS™) has been developed to
overcome this.
When using SIS™ the pan controls may be switched for either conventional or SIS™
operation on each input channel. In SIS™ mode the centre position of the control
routes the input to a separate channel output, in this case it pans from left to centre or
right to centre. Backing vocalists can be panned slightly towards the centre cluster to
improve intelligibility, while keeping the featured vocal ‘front and centre’. Musical
instruments can be placed in a conventional mix then easily switched to the centre for
solos. In theatrical productions, SIS™ gives the ability to pan an actor’s voice across
three channels following their on stage movements. In stereo-only productions, the
centre output can be used to provide a mono-to-mix-base feed activating a single ‘left
+ right to centre’ switch.
The routing section consists of eight mix group bus assignment switches, stereo and
mono bus switches, panning control and SIS™. Pressing the SIS button on any input
configures that module for left-centre-right (LCR) mixing. This is the same type of
routing offered in the more expensive Heritage series consoles, and a nice feature to
offer in a mid priced console.
