operation
The water pump driven by a poly-V belt by the crankshaft
sends coolant into the crankcase and with a greater head into
the cylinder head.
When the coolant temperature reaches and exceeds the
working temperature, it causes the thermostat to open and
the fluid is channelled from here to the radiator and cooled
by the fan.
The pressure inside the system depending on the tempera-
ture variation is controlled by the discharge and charge valves
incorporated in the expansion reservoir filling plug.
The discharge valve has a double function:
- maintain the system slightly pressurised in order to raise
the boiling point of the coolant;
- vent excess pressure into the atmosphere that is caused
by high temperature of the coolant.
The function of the inlet valve is to permit the transfer of coo-
lant from the expansion tank to the radiator when a low pres-
sure is generated inside the system due to coolant volume
reduction as a result of lowering of temperature.

Check that the pump casing shows no sign of crack-
ing or water leakage; replace the water pump assem-
bly if it does.
