Precautions
Before beginning installaon or removal, observe the following precauons:
Danger: Never look into the end of an opcal cable. Permanent eye damage or blindness can occur if laser
radiaon is present.
Danger: Never handle exposed ber with bare hands or touch it to bare skin. Fiber fragments can enter
the skin and are dicult to detect and remove. Follow local safety precauons regarding ber.
Warning: PIUs and pluggable opcs can be damaged by ESD during installaon, removal, storage, or
shipment. Such equipment is stamped with anelectrostac marks and requires special care in handling and
storage. When handling PIUs and pluggable opcs, keep in mind that they can be damaged by ESD during
installaon, removal, or whenever they are contacted so be sure to wear a wrist strap as described in the
next Warning.
Warning: Wear an ESD wrist strap with a minimum resistance of 1 megohm that is properly secured to the
ESD grounding wrist strap connecon socket when handling PIUs and pluggable opcs to prevent possible
PIU damage. Before using the strap, check it for opens, shorts, and the minimum resistance value. If the
strap does not pass these checks, do not use it.
