In a basic HVPLS model, PEs can be classified into the following types:
l UPE
An Underlayer PE (UPE) refers to a user convergence device that is directly connected to
a CE. A UPE needs to be connected to only one PE in a fully-connected VPLS network. A
UPE supports routing and MPLS encapsulation. If a UPE is connected to multiple CEs and
provides the basic bridge function, frame forwarding is performed only on the UPE. This
reduces the burden on a Superstratum PE (SPE).
l SPE
An SPE refers to a core device that is connected to the UPE and located in the fully-
connected VPLS network. An SPE is connected to all the other devices in a fully-connected
VPLS network.
For an SPE that is connected to a UPE, the UPE acts as a CE. The PW set up between the
UPE and the SPE serves as the AC of the SPE. The SPE must learn the MAC addresses of
all the sites at the UPE side and those of the UPE interfaces that are connected to the SPE.
VLL Accessing the VPLS Network
As shown in Figure 6-4, in the HVPLS, SPE1 and SPE2 support VPLS and VSIs of the SPEs
adopt LDP as the signaling protocol of the VPLS.
In practical networks, such as MAN access networks, if a UPE does not support the dynamic
virtual leased line (VLL), the UPE needs to access SPEs through static VLLs. A UPE and an
SPE generally set up a static virtual circuit (SVC) to create a VLL.
